The Johannesburg freelance market
Johannesburg has the biggest corporate client base in the country: finance, mining, media, consulting and agencies in Sandton, Rosebank, Braamfontein and Midrand.
Local tip
Corporate clients often require supplier onboarding: proof of banking details, a tax number, sometimes a B-BBEE affidavit and company registration. Have these ready as one PDF.
Admin is the same nationwide
- Trade as a sole proprietor or register a (Pty) Ltd at CIPC (online)
- Register for tax on SARS eFiling, so you don't need to visit a branch
- Provisional tax (IRP6) by 31 August and the end of February
- VAT only becomes compulsory above R2.3 million turnover in 12 months
Getting paid
- Send a quote and get written acceptance
- Sign a contract and take a deposit
- Send a numbered invoice with banking details and a due date
- Remind, then send a letter of demand
If a client won't pay
Claims up to R20,000 can go to the Small Claims Court for free, without a lawyer. In Johannesburg, start at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court (Small Claims). Send a letter of demand first and give the client at least 14 days.
