Signs it may be time to move from sole proprietor to a private company in South Africa — and what changes when you do.

Most start as sole proprietors

It's simple and cheap. You trade in your own name and pay personal income tax.

Signs it may be time

  • Larger clients ask for a registered company
  • You take on bigger contracts or risk
  • Your income has grown steadily
  • You want to bring in partners or staff

What changes

A company files its own returns, needs its own bank account and records, and is taxed separately. Speak to an accountant before switching.
