Turning a side hustle into a real business in South Africa
When your side hustle outgrows evenings and weekends: pricing, tax registration, and when (if ever) to register a company at CIPC.
The signs it's becoming a business
- Regular monthly income you could forecast
- Clients coming back or referring others
- You're turning down work for lack of time
Fix the foundations first
- A rate that actually covers your time and tax
- Written quotes and contracts for every job
- A separate bank account and weekly record-keeping
- A tax set-aside from every payment
Do you need to register a company?
Usually not yet. A sole proprietor can scale a long way. Consider a (Pty) Ltd when you want limited liability, hire people, or clients require it — and remember it adds separate tax returns and CIPC annual returns.
Watch the VAT threshold
Once taxable turnover passes R2.3 million in 12 months, VAT registration is compulsory. Voluntary registration is possible from R120,000 but rarely makes sense for a small side hustle.
