Tax compliance status (TCS) pin vs tax clearance certificate
How South Africans get a SARS tax compliance status (TCS) pin on eFiling — the replacement for the old tax clearance certificate — and share it with clients.
Quick answer
SARS no longer issues paper tax clearance certificates. You request a Tax Compliance Status (TCS) on eFiling and get a PIN. Clients, tenders and banks use the PIN to check your status online whenever they need to.
How to get your pin
- Log in to SARS eFiling
- Open Tax Status (Tax Compliance Status Request)
- Choose the reason (for example tender or good standing)
- Submit — if your returns and payments are up to date, a PIN is issued
- Share the PIN with the client; they verify it on eFiling
If your status is non-compliant
- Outstanding returns — submit them
- Unpaid tax — pay or arrange a payment plan with SARS
- Missing registration details — update your profile
- Then request the status again
Why freelancers need it
Government (via CSD), larger corporates and some funders ask for proof that your tax affairs are in order before they pay you. Keeping your ITR12 and provisional tax returns up to date keeps the PIN valid.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tax clearance certificate the same as a TCS pin?
The TCS pin replaced the tax clearance certificate. People still search for 'tax clearance certificate' but SARS now issues a PIN.
How long is a TCS pin valid?
Your status is checked live, so it reflects your compliance on the day someone verifies it. It stays green while your returns and payments are up to date.
