How to register on SARS eFiling, step by step
Register for SARS eFiling as a freelancer: what you need, the step-by-step process, adding your tax types and getting your tax number.
What you need
- Your South African ID or passport
- Your income tax reference number. If you don't have one, eFiling can register you
- A cellphone number and email address in your own name
- Your banking details, for refunds
The steps
- Go to sarsefiling.co.za and choose Register
- Select Individual (or Organisation for a company) and enter your ID and personal details
- Confirm the one-time PIN sent to your phone
- Log in and check your profile, address and banking details
- Ask SARS to activate tax types you need, e.g. provisional tax (IRP6) or VAT, through eFiling or the SARS MobiApp
If something goes wrong
If your details don't match SARS records, eFiling may ask you to book an appointment or upload documents. Use the SARS website's online query and booking system rather than queueing at a branch.
